The Grand Rapids Advantage

Grand Rapids Airport is small, yet also modern, which may provide the perfect balance for the weary traveler looking for a spot of peace along with a few amenities.

For those who can't sleep, a game room is available, complete with a change machine if you need quarters. You'll also enjoy the business centers should they be available to you, and there is an observation deck on the mezzanine. There are a variety of food and drink options to refuel, and shops that will sell anything you need, duty-free include. They aren't open at all hours, so check schedules if you're arriving late. Free WiFi is also available.

The Hassles

Vending machines are the only option available for those arriving too late to make use of the various restaurants; be sure to plan ahead and get your food and drinks when you can, if you're staying the night. Unfortunately, Grand Rapids is not exactly built to accommodate tired overnight passengers. Most of the seating is of the bucket variety; not at all conducive to sleep, and oftentimes the TV in the lobby is too loud even if there was room for some shuteye. Bring a travel mattress and hope you can find a reasonable spot. There are also no showers, and mobile charging via power outlets seems to be only available in the lounges.

Shops and Restaurants

Fortunately, there are a good number of fine dining establishments and shops, some of which open as early as 4 am, which is a nice bonus.

There's the Bell's Brew Pub, featuring at least six types of beer on tap, or Greens if you're feeling like a light salad instead. Quiznos is also available. If you just want coffee, Starbucks is in the house, and you'll get a chance to try a Great American Bagel, too. Several incarnations of the Grand Rapids Magazine Travel store are scattered throughout the airport. Despite the name, each provides not only periodicals, but books, souvenirs, some necessaries, and candy or snacks as well.

A Series of Firsts

Grand Rapids Airport is something of a milestone when it comes to aviation. A historical Wright bi-plane took off from Michigan's Comstock Park fairgrounds in 1911, before the first airport was even built, of course. In 1926, Grand Rapids became the home of the first regular airline service, as it started a line from there to Detroit.

The famous Charles Lindbergh also visited Grand Rapids when he landed The Spirit of St. Louis at the Kent County airport. Shipping furniture via cargo plane is commonplace nowadays, but it started in Grand Rapids, and the first shipment was overseen by Miss Grand Rapids herself.
